I’ll never forget the year I won a cupcake contest. It was back when cupcakes were the dessert of the decade, and the challenge was to create a flavor for Miami’s own DJ Laz. IYKYK 😎

Knowing his Cuban roots (which are the same as mine) and his party-loving personality, I came up with a Miami-inspired flavor and called it Oye Morena (the name of one of his songs).

Out of 15 entries, he picked mine!

The flavor was vanilla cupcakes filled with guava and cream cheese and topped with dulce de leche frosting and shredded coconut flakes. There are honestly the next best thing after Cuban guava pastries!

I remember seeing the tweet and thinking, “Wait… did I just win?” 😳

I had never won anything before in my life. That moment pretty much sealed my fate as a recipe developer, and now these cupcakes are one of my favorite Cuban-inspired desserts to make for family celebrations.

Let me show you how to make these award-winning guava cupcakes!

How To Make Guava & Cheese Filled Cupcakes

Making these guava cupcakes is easier than it looks!

All you need to do is mix the batter, bake until golden, then fill each cupcake with guava marmalade and softened cream cheese, and top with creamy dulce de leche frosting and a sprinkle of shredded coconut flakes.

The result? Soft, moist vanilla cupcakes that taste sweet, tangy, and tart. Also, they’re so Miami-coded, a first-generation Cuban DJ picked them before even tasting them. 😎 The full recipe is below!

👉🏼 Can’t find guava marmalade for the filling? It happens. Here’s what you can do. Swap in tangy guava jam or melt guava paste with a bit of water until smooth and spoonable!

These guava & cheese cupcakes are definitely my go-to, especially after winning that super Miami DJ Laz contest years ago.

I will say, however, that sometimes I reach for a silky guava swirl cheesecake or scroll through my collection of guava recipes when I’m craving a sweet treat. There’s truly no wrong way to enjoy guava!

Growing up in a Cuban family, guava paste was always in the pantry. This is why you see so many guava recipes on my blog. I love it!

But I’ll be honest, buying guava fruit to make recipes (or just enjoy on their own) wasn’t always our go-to move. That was until I learned how easy it is to make homemade guava jam!

This guava jam recipe is made with fresh pink guava, sugar, and a splash of lime juice, so every bite is packed with real fruit flavor. No pectin, no pulp from the freezer, just a thick, spreadable jam that tastes like home.

I love spooning it over Cuban crackers, but it’s just as good for making guava jam bars, or even drizzling over ice cream. Once you try it, you might be slightly addicted. Not that I speak from experience or anything. 👀

Let’s make it!

Making Guava Jam with Fresh Pink Guavas

Ok, I won’t lie. The process is kinda long, but it’s sooo worth it. Making guava jam from fresh fruit means you’ll spend some time peeling, seeding, and simmering, but that’s where the magic happens.

👉🏼 Make sure to look for ripe guavas. A ripe guava has green skin with pink flesh. When you squeeze it, it should be firm but have a bit of give. Kinda like a ripe pear. The smell is also fragrant, sweet, and tart.

The texture of this guava jam is thick and spreadable, similar to guava marmalade but without the drippy, liquidy consistency. It holds its shape on a spoon, making it perfect for spreading on crackers or toast without sliding off (similar to my mango jam).

The flavor is tart and slightly tangy from the lime juice, sweet enough to feel like a treat, but balanced so you can enjoy it morning, noon, or night.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb ripe guavas
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice

Instructions

  • Rinse the guavas then trim the ends off. Cut them into quarters. Transfer to a Dutch over or saucepan and add water.
  • Bring to a boil, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, stirring frequently, until guavas are soft and break apart.
  • Using an immersion blender, off the heat, blend the mixture until pureed.
  • Place a sieve over a large bowl. Spoon the pureed guava, in batches, onto a sieve and strain, discarding the seeds and skin. You should get approx. 3 cups of guava puree.
  • Transfer the guava puree back to the pot. Add sugar and lime juice. Bring to a boil. Cook, stirring constantly, for about 20-30 minutes until the jam has thickened.
  • You’ll know the guava jam is ready when you're able to see the bottom of the pot as you stir. The guava jam will be thick and will stick to the back of a wooden spoon.
  • Ladle the guava jam an airtight container. Bring to room temperature before placing in the fridge for up to 2-3 weeks (if it lasts that long). Enjoy!

Ok, here’s the deal. Un batido de trigo will forever have a special place in my heart, but lately I’ve been craving something fruity.

Since I love guava so much (I mean, I have a plethora of recipes made with guava), I whipped up this Cuban guava shake with fresh strawberries.

And I have to say… it is chef’s kiss!

The guava nectar pairs beautifully with strawberry and milk, giving it a creamy texture with a sweet-tart flavor.

Growing up, batidos were our comfort drink, and this batido de guayaba y fresa is one I’ll be making on repeat all summer (nah, who am I kidding… I’ll be making this all YEAR long!).

You’re gonna love this one. Let me show you how to make it!

Step-by-Step Instructions

Making this blended Cuban guava shake with strawberries is quick and easy. Cuban shakes are typically made without ice cream.

Just milk, sweetened condensed milk, and fruit. That’s what makes this creamy guava milkshake so light and refreshing.

Similar to making un batido de mango, all you need for this strawberry guava shake is to blend guava nectar, fresh strawberries, whole milk, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, a pinch of salt, and ice until smooth and creamy.

🥤 By the way, I used guava nectar for this batido. This is the one I used. Can you use ripe pink guavas? Absolutely! Just scoop out the flesh from 2-3 fresh guavas and add it to the blender in place of the guava nectar.

Also, you can use frozen strawberries 🍓 in this shake. Just skip the ice and blend the frozen strawberries straight in.

If the shake turns out too thick, blend it up with a bit more milk (or water) until it’s just the way you like it.

In Cuban culture, milkshakes and sandwiches are a perfect pair. My family would often enjoy a Cuban batido alongside a pressed Cuban sandwich. It’s the ultimate salty-sweet combo.

Hope you love it as much as I do!

Strawberry Guava Shake (Cuban Batido De Guayaba y Fresa)

This strawberry guava shake is smooth, creamy, and filled with the flavors I grew up with. Guava has long been a staple in Cuban cooking, and it shines beautifully in this batido de guayaba y fresa when blended with fresh strawberries and sweetened condensed milk. Making Cuban batidos at home was always a part of my family, and this recipe captures that same sense of comfort and nostalgia. It’s especially satisfying with a warm Cuban sandwich.

  • 1/2 cup ice

Instructions

  • Add the milk, sweetened condensed milk, sugar, guava nectar, strawberries, salt, and ice to a high-speed blender. Blend on high until smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness as desired. If you prefer a thinner consistency, you can blend with a bit more milk (or water).
  • Pour into a glass and serve immediately. Enjoy on its own or with your favorite Cuban sandwich.

I’ve never met a guava dessert I didn’t love, but lately, this Cuban guava daiquiri is the one thing I can’t stop making.

It’s a simple mix of white rum, lime juice, and guava nectar that tastes like a mini tropical vacation.

And if you’re into guava cocktails as much as I am (hi, guava elderflower mimosas 👋🏼), this one totally hits different.

Let me show you how to make it!

Step-By-Step Instructions

The guava daiquiri is a tropical spin on the ultimate Cuban classic.

Fun fact: They say the original daiquiri was born in Cuba around 1900, named after a small town just outside Santiago.

There’s even a Hemingway variation that uses grapefruit juice, but… I don’t know about you, I’ll take guava over grapefruit any day.

This version keeps the same crisp, citrusy base but adds sweet guava nectar for a tropical twist that’s super refreshing (kinda like my guava margarita!).

I’m always experimenting with guava in beverages, from iced guava passionfruit drinks to cocktails, and this one might be the easiest of the bunch.

It’s light, not too sweet, and makes a fun alternative to a classic Cuban mojito when you’re craving something different.

💡 Want a frozen guava daiquiri version? Just toss the same ingredients into a blender with 1 to 1.5 cups of ice and blend until smooth. Perfect for hot sunny days or a crowd.

Whether you call it a classic Cuban daiquiri with a guava twist or just your new favorite drink, you’ll see why guava and rum are such a perfect pair.

When you grow up in a Cuban family, enjoying a slice of cream cheese stacked on top of a slice of guava paste is a rite of passage.

Once you taste that sweet combo, you’ll never be the same. I felt the same way when I tasted these delicious guava cheese empanadas. ¡Que rico!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying these empanadas are better than pastelitos de guayaba y queso by any means but, what I am saying is that there’s a place for both on the dessert table. Let me show you!

Empanada Dough

First things first, let’s talk empanada dough. We’re using my sweet pork lard-infused empanada dough for this recipe.

You heard that right. The dough is made with pork lard and brown sugar-cinnamon syrup and it’s pretty freaking awesome.

I recommend preparing the dough on the day of. However, if you prefer to plan ahead, you can make it in advance and freeze the empanada rounds between parchment paper squares in a freezer bag.

Just make sure to thaw them completely before filling and cooking.

Alternatively, you can opt for ready-made frozen empanada discs available in the freezer section of your local grocery store.

Leftover dough? Make my tastes-just-like-arroz-con-pollo chicken empanadas next!

Prepping Instructions

Ingredients for empanadas
Cut the cream cheese and guava paste into 1-inch slices.
In the center of an empanada disc, place a guava paste slice and a slice of cream cheese on top.

Fold the top half of the circle over the filling then seal with a fork. Repeat with the rest of the empanadas.

Cooking The Empanadas – 3 Ways

I’m personally scared of frying with hot oil (Mami makes fun of me lol) but that’s really the best way to make these sweet empanadas.

They come out crispy and delicious. Nevertheless, you can also make them in the oven or the air fryer.

Here are other cooking methods for these empanadas:

On The Stove

In a large skillet, heat 1 cup of oil to 400ºF. Fry the empanadas, a few at a time, until crispy and golden brown on all sides.

Drain the empanadas on paper towel-lined plates. Allow them to cool slightly. Serve immediately.

Three Guava Cheese empanadas in hot oil with a thermometer in the pot.
Guava Cream Cheese Empanadas on a white plate with a mug of coffee on the side.

In The Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to 375°F. Assemble the empanadas and lightly brush them with oil to help them crisp up in the air fryer.

Place the empanadas in a single layer in the air fryer basket. Cook for 10-15 minutes, turning them halfway through, until they’re crispy and golden.

In The Oven

Preheat your oven to 375°F. Assemble the empanadas and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Brush them with a light coat of egg wash for a golden finish. Bake for about 20-25 minutes or until the empanadas are golden brown and crisp.

Serving Suggestions

When it comes to enjoying these sweet guava and cheese empanadas, nothing hits the spot like un cafe cubano con espumita or un cafe con leche bien calientico. Either one would be a match made in heaven!

Storage Tips

Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days then place in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Freeze before baking for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.

If you’re new here, hi, my name is Jamie and I’m obsessed with all things guava. Growing up in a Cuban family means you were brought up with guava fruit, guava paste, guava nectar, and all types of homemade recipes using guava.

If you’ve never heard of guava, I’m happy to share more about this amazing fruit!

What is Guava Fruit?

Guava fruit is a tropical fruit that originated in Central America but it is now cultivated in many tropical regions including parts of Asia, the Caribbean, South America, and Florida.

It has grown in Cuba since colonial times, introduced by the Spanish during their colonization of the Americas. Cuba’s warm climate and fertile soil provided an ideal environment for guava trees to thrive across the island.

This tropical fruit has a nutrient-dense fruit packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It’s an excellent source of vitamin C, vitamin A, potassium, and fiber.

Guava has a special place in Cuban Cuisine for its versatility. We use guava in traditional Cuban desserts, such as pastelitos de guayaba, pastries filled with guava paste. These pastries are often enjoyed as a sweet treat or served alongside Cuban espresso.

Beyond desserts, we also use guava in savory dishes like guava bbq chicken wings. The sweetness of the guava complements the savory flavors of the meat, creating a delicious contrast.

pink guava on a white place sliced open

Different Varieties

There are over 30 varieties of guava, each with its own unique characteristics. Some of the most common varieties include the white-fleshed guava and pink-fleshed guava.

  • White-fleshed guavas have green to yellow-ish skin with white flesh, similar to an apple. They are the most common variety and more tangy-sweet in flavor, almost like a mix between a strawberry and a lemon.
  • Pink-fleshed guavas are known as ‘red guavas’ for their pink-reddish insides. They look like limes from the outside with green skin. However, similar to strawberries, they have a sweet, tart flavor and their flesh is juicy and refreshing.

Oh and in case you were wondering… yes, you can eat the guava seeds. In fact, the seeds are edible and contribute to the texture of the fruit!

Where To Buy

We have fresh guava year-round in grocery stores and farmer’s markets here in South Florida. In general, they are available during the warmer months in grocery stores across the country.

When shopping for guavas, look for fruits that are firm with a bit of give (like when you feel a pear for ripeness). Their skin should be green, yellow, or pink, depending on the variety you prefer. And it should smell sweet and tropical!

Guava vs Other Fruits (apple, papaya, passion fruit)

While apples have a crisp texture and mild flavor, papayas are soft and have a sweet, musky taste. Passion fruits are tart and tangy with edible seeds, similar to guava. However, guava stands out with its unique tropical flavor and juicy texture!

Storage

Guavas should be stored at room temperature until ripe. Once ripe, they can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days to prolong freshness. If you have excess guavas, you can freeze them for longer-term storage. Simply slice the guavas, remove the seeds if desired, and store them in an airtight container or freezer bag.

What is Guava Paste?

Guava paste is essentially like fruit leather made by cooking the guava fruit with sugar and fresh lime juice until it becomes a very thick [delicious] paste. While the jams and marmalade are drippy, the guava paste is a thick, sticky block that’s soft enough to slice. And it tastes oh so good!
